The Genetic Counselling Team at PACSO provides specialized support for patients navigating the complexities of genetic conditions. Our genetic counsellors work closely with patients and families to offer personalized guidance based on individual genetic makeup, helping patients make informed decisions about their health and treatment options. By combining the fields of genetics and psychology, our team is uniquely equipped to address the emotional, ethical, and medical aspects of genetic conditions.
Through genetic counselling, we aim to empower individuals with the knowledge they need to better understand their conditions, family histories, and potential risks, enabling them to make proactive choices regarding their health and care.
Dr. Chantelle J. Scott has been fascinated by the world of genetics since her high school days, when she first learned about the uniqueness of the human genetic code. Growing up with a mother who worked with children with special needs, Dr. Scott became deeply interested in genetic conditions and their impact on families. This led her to pursue a BSc in Biological Human Life Sciences at Stellenbosch University, where she majored in both psychology and genetics.
Her academic journey continued with an Honours degree in Genetics in 2008, followed by a Master of Science in Genetic Counselling at the University of Cape Town (UCT). During her studies, Dr. Scott gained invaluable hands-on experience at the Down Syndrome Association of Western Cape (DSAWC), where she worked closely with families affected by genetic conditions and conducted her Master’s thesis on the experiences of families raising a child with Down syndrome.
As part of her training, Dr. Scott also gained significant experience through in-service training at Groote Schuur and the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, counseling individuals and families affected by a wide range of genetic conditions, including prenatal, paediatric, and adult conditions.
Dr. Scott is passionate about helping patients understand their genetic makeup, empowering them to make informed decisions about their health. Her unique combination of expertise in genetics and psychology ensures that her approach is both compassionate and scientifically informed.
